Policy JC- Pupil Assignment

Attendance areas for each elementary, middle, and high school of the district will be approved by the Board of Education. In establishing attendance areas, consideration will be given to providing the opportunity for children to attend a school close to home, major streets and hazards, geographic features, equalization of capacity among sites, current boundaries, and student diversity, consistent with available capacity. Pupils will attend the school serving their residence, except as provided below.
1. The Board of Education wishes to expand choice, consistent with a set of core values as expressed in Resolution 2908, that creates opportunities to improve student performance, better meet Denver student and family needs, and encourage more Denver families to choose a Denver public school, within available resources districtwide. To encourage choice, pupils may enroll in any district school, based on space availability and qualifications for a particular program, if application is made in accordance with the established process.
2. The school district may assign or reassign pupils to schools for a variety of reasons including the following:
* health or safety considerations
* disciplinary reasons
* program participation
* court orders or Department of Social Services requests
* space availability.
3. Students may participate in magnet schools and programs that are established to provide enhanced educational opportunities and promote integration by voluntary choice.
The Superintendent shall promulgate procedures and time lines as necessary to implement this policy.
